The small, ancient city of Endere, further north, dates from the first to the ninth century, though abandoned for much of the seventh century. It was alternately under the rule of China or Tibet. There was an active Buddhist monastery in 518 when Sung Yun came by, but it was vacant in 644 during the travels of Xuang Zang. It was explored by M. Aurel Stein in 1901 and 1906.
