Vaasa is nowadays the 14th biggest city in Finland after some smaller towns were jointed with neighboring municipals in eastern and northern Finland.
Vaasa has 57000 inhabitants in city area and roughly 100 000 altogether with close municipals.
City was established 1606 about 7 km south-east from it's current location. City center was moved to the shore after a big fire that demolished the old-Vaasa town almost completely in 1852.
Vaasa name is inherited from a famous Swedish king named Gustav Vasa.
Botnic gulf has narrowest point in Vaasa archipelago and from the outmost island there is only about 20 kilometer's trip to Sweden.
