Ghod Bhandar is a historic port-city in the Konkan, standing on Salsette island, facing the Vasai / Bassein creek. However, under the English, the community declined and has been reduced in significance. Reclamation of land between the Salsette and Dharavi islands, has also hurt the city as it acted as a transit port for marine products, etc. between the islands, and onto the major ports of Sopara (Shurparaka), Thane and Kalyan. The site of the city is now divided between the Municipalities of Thane in the east and of Mira Road-Bhayandar in the west. The part lying in Thane city is called "Ghodbunder Road".
Ghod Bhandar also has a historic fort now largely in ruins.
