German Battleship Tirpitz Anchorages

The WWII German battleship spent most of her short life here in the southern reaches of Altenfjord, actually known as Kaafjord. She anchored along both sides of this area of Kaafjord during her stay. On 22 September 1943, she was attacked by Royal Navy X-craft (mini-submarines) and knocked out of action for six months. Then on the morning of 3 April 1944 as she prepared for seatrials in the wider Altenfjord, she was bombed by the RAF putting out of commission for another three months. Various other air raids against her failed and on 15 October 1944 she was sailed to Haakoy Island 200 miles to the southwest of Altenfjord...just three miles west of Tormso.
