Описание
- It is situated in Barsei Depression, Olt River basin, Brasov County
- The total area has about 420 ha. The reservoir and the adjacent area has about 180 ha and about 240 ha is the fish pond complex and the adjacent area
- The reservoir was built on the Hamaradia rivulet and the fish ponds were built after the dam construction in the basin of the same rivulet
- The emergent and marsh vegetation (reed bed, reed mace, sedge etc.) is well covering on the western shore of the reservoir and also on the southern side of three large fish ponds. It has about 60 ha
- It has many habitat types, such as: stagnant water surface, emergent vegetation (reed, cattail), marshes, hay fields, pastures, rivulets, mudflats during fish harvesting etc.
Why it is protected area ?
- The main aim for designation of this area as Special Protection Area and Ramsar Site is its importance for birds and their habitats. Beginning on 1993 there were identified more than 200 birds species. Some of these species are included in annex I of Birds Directive and in Bern and Bonn Conventions, such as: Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Corncrake (Crex crex) etc. All these species are considered as “key” species for the conservation of the area.
- The whole area is the most important concentration area for water birds from Brasov County and one of the most important from the central side of Romania (Transylvania)
- For some bird species (Black Stork, Little Egret, Great Egret, and Shelduck) is the area with the largest flocks observed inside Transylvania. This area is called “The Delta of Brasov” or “The Delta within the mountains”
- Beside avifauna the area is also important for plant species and vegetation associations. Some plant species are important because are rare and protected in Romania or at the European level. The protected plant species included in the national Red List (Oltean et al., 1994) are: Pedicularis sceptrum-carolinum, Ligularia sibirica (also included in the EC Habitats Directive, annex I), Menyanthes trifoliata, Comarum palustre, Valeriana simplicifolia, Dactylorhiza incarnata, Epipactis palustris, Trollius europaeus. In the north-western side of the reservoir there is a eutrophic marsh where some of these species are growing. This is well known by botanists before the dam construction. Other marshes and peat bogs are occurring on the largest fish ponds. All these areas represent remnants of the old marshes of the Brasov Depression
- The mammals are also well represented; the most important species is the otter (Lutra lutra), included in the EC Habitats Directive, annex II
- Firstly, the reservoir and one fish pond were designated as local protected area by Brasov County Council resolution. After this, the area was extended and formed the actual protected area of national importance (Government Resolution no. 2151 / 2004). The area is also Ramsar Site – Wetland of International Importance (Government Resolution no. 1586 / 2006). From this point of view this is the only one Ramsar Site from Transylvania and the fifth from Romania at the level of 2006. During 2007 the area extended will be designated as Natura 2000 Site (Special Protection Area)
What bird species could we observed ?
During breeding season
- In this period we could see: Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Pochard (Aythya ferina), Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) – in some years, Coot (Fulica atra), Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Corncrake (Crex crex), species of Crakes (Porzana porzana, P. parva), Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus), different species of passerines, such as: Reed Warblers (4 species), Savi’s and River Warbler (Locustella spp.), Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus), Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus), Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), Stonechat (Saxicola torquata), Red – backed Shrike (Lanius collurio), Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus), Corn Bunting (Miliaria calandra). Some of these species are breeding here with high population for the Transylvania territory. In some cases the breeding population could represent about 1% or more than 1% of the minimum Romanian breeding population, as for: Grey Heron, Purple Heron, and Marsh Harrier
During migration (spring and autumn)
- During spring and fall (autumn) migration the area is visited by hundreds or thousands of birds, such as: Divers, Grebes, Cormorants, Geese, Ducks, Waders, Gulls, and Terns. During fish harvesting tens hectares of mudflat are occurring. In this habitat many bird species and populations are feeding and resting. Some of these species are “key” species for their conservation at the local level (Black Stork, Great Egret). In these periods we could observed also birds of prey, such as: Eagles, Osprey, Hawks, Harriers, Buzzards, Falcons etc.). In the last years 1 – 2 White – tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) have wintering here
Characteristic of the area
- One of the few breeding place in reed bed for Grey Heron from Romania and the single from Transylvania
- The single breeding site of Great Egret from the central part of Romania (Transylvania), this species has bred here in the 2006 breeding season
- The largest colony of Purple Heron from Transylvania, including Rotbav fishpond colony, 10 km from Dumbravita
What could we fish ?
- The reservoir is one of the best angling area from Brasov County and from Transylvania. Both local and non – local anglers are attracted by its fish and its angling conditions
- You could fish: Carp, Chinese Carp, Goldfish, Perch, Pike, Alburnus and others
