The impressive Troodos mountain range stretches across most of the western side of Cyprus, offering cool sanctuary and idyllic hours spent in long walks in its scented pine forests in summer and winter sports and ski-ing in winter. More information can be found on
There are nine churches and one monastery in Troodos that are counted among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites and several other monasteries, of which the Kykkos monastery is the richest and most famous. The nine Byzantine churches are:

* Timiou Stavrou at Pelendri
* Ayios Nikolaos tis Stegis
* Panayia Podithou

The area has been known since ancient times for its mines, and in the Byzantine period it became a great centre of Byzantine art, as churches and monasteries were built in the mountains, away from the threatened coastline.

The mountains of the Trodos rise grandly above the scorching plains and coastal strips of Cyprus' south, culminating in Mt Olympus, the country's highest peak at 1952m.
In the past the mountains have provided refuge to religious communities, colonial civil servants and the wealthy of the Levant seeking respite from the heat.
More recently it attracts skiers in winter and, in summer, hikers and weekend picnickers throng the spiralling mountain roads. Visitors to the Trodos should allow themselves at least a week to see most of what the region has to offer.
The highest point of the Troodos range is Mount Olympus, (1,952 meters) easily discernible from almost any place of the island. A little below it stands Troodos village....
